The Gut, Your Digestive Factory

Inside of you is a small but mighty and miraculous factory, designed to efficiently and effectively help you convert what you eat and ingest daily, 24/7, into nutrients and energy that keep you alive and healthy.

All of the elements of your factory collaborate to make up your digestive system, which consists of ten (10) major organs, and your gut’s four (4) main parts – the digestive tube, the gut-associated lymphatic tissue (GALT), the intestinal flora, and the gut’s nervous system. The condition of your gut, the major player in your factory, determines your overall health.

How does the factory operate?

Consider eating your favorite food. Before you even put it into your mouth, your five senses engage: you see what you are about to eat; often, you smell what you are about to eat; sometimes, you may even hear what you are about to eat, and your mouth starts to produce saliva to begin the process of breaking down this food so that it is easier to digest. Once in your mouth, you begin to chew, further breaking down the food for digestion. Actually, the food you eat passes through several phases of this breakdown process so your body can use as much of it as possible for fuel. From your mouth, it travels down your esophagus (a long tube) that empties into your stomach, where it stays for about three (3) hours, producing even more fluids and compounds to break down your food further. Other organs get involved in this factory party to break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in the small intestine area. Blood joins the party, taking these nutrients all through the body to feed its organs and tissues. All that is left – fiber, water, and dead cells – travel to the large intestine where it forms the stool that is stored in the rectum and eliminated during a bowel movement.

A well-organized factory, working together synergistically, ensures that the process goes off without a hitch, results from a healthy digestive process and gut. When it does not go well, due to something we eat or ingest that the body struggles to digest and use for fuel, or if some parts of the factory are dysfunctional (particularly your gut), this leads to an unhealthy digestive process, which can cause one or more issues, disorders, and chronic diseases.

The Guests in your Gut: Five Facts about Intestinal Flora

  1. Metabolism Regulation and Digestion: The gut bacteria handle the complex task of breaking down even further the nutrients we consume by metabolizing bile to assist with digestion. The small intestine and the liver are key partners in this process.
  2. Regulates the Immune System: It clears out pathogens and maintains a gut barrier, preventing bacteria and bacteria toxins from leaking into the bloodstream. Inflammation is also a healthy function when working properly; if it malfunctions, it can develop a chronic condition.
  3. Gut-Brain Connection: The gut is physically connected to the brain; gut microbes produce neurotransmitters that influence mood and cognition, which means when there is dysbiosis (an imbalance in the microbiome), it can result in depression, anxiety, and more.
  4. Protection Against Chronic Disease: It lowers the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and inflammatory bowel disease, among others.
  5. Builds and Maintains a Gut Barrier: Some bacteria strengthen the intestinal lining, preventing leaky gut and systemic inflammation.
