Meet Your Mentor and Course Co-Creator, Gina Kernicky
Gina Kernicky is double graduate of the University of Miami, with degrees in Psychology and Criminology. She received a Master’s Degree in Social Service from the first Social Work program in the country, Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research (clinical application track) at Bryn Mawr College. She has over 10 years of professional experience in the mental health, therapeutic, and counseling fields, with a specialization in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and disability. As a sibling of an individual low on the ASD spectrum, in addition to numerous other medical and mental health diagnoses, Gina has over 30 years of direct experience with individuals and families dealing with ASD. Currently Gina works as the Director of Social Services, a department she founded to teach Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) to take on and better serve individuals higher on the spectrum as well as creative therapies such as art, music, and movement, at the PAAL (Preparing Adolescents and Adults for Life) program for individuals with a primary diagnosis of ASD under MECA (Mission for Educating Children with Autism).
Gina also operates as an independent Alternative Medicine Counselor and Cannabis Advocate. In 2016, she moved to the neighboring state of New Jersey to become a legal cannabis patient, as it was not yet available in her home state of Pennsylvania. Once PA legalized medical marijuana, Gina returned to PA to become one of the first medical patients in PA. As a person who has qualified in multiple state medical marijuana programs, Gina has personal experience with what it’s like to live with debilitating conditions and chronic pain. Beginning her work in the cannabis field in Pennsylvania Dispensaries, Gina started by educating patients as a Product Specialist and Patient Care Coordinator. After a year she continued her work by training and managing others as Manager of Sales and Customer Experience. However, through working in the dispensaries Gina bore witness to how uneducated patients were about the laws surrounding the legal usage of their cards and products or even what products to use and how to use them. These professional and personal experiences have provided Gina with extensive knowledge working with patients to achieve better health through medical marijuana. Drawing from her career in mental health counseling and ASD, Gina began incorporating medical marijuana into her practice and has assisted many clients with obtaining their medical cards in addition to explaining PA medical marijuana laws and best methods and products to specifically treat their conditions.
In her spare time, Gina enjoys gaming (loves traveling playing Pokémon Go with her husband), party/wedding planning, traveling, and spending time with her family – her husband, Bengal and Siberian cats, and teacup Pomeranian.
